You plan your day.  Your life.  Your success.  No one else will.

Welcome to the show.  Today we are going to dive in talking about the importance of a plan.

Write down the plan for the week, day, even some hours.

Passion Planner walks you through the process to create your Passion Roadmap.

When you order your Passion Planner, they give one away.

Speak the Lingo:

Today's Leadership Lingo Term: Priority

You have the the right to precede others in order, rank, and privilege.  You enjoy the right giving your most important focus and time to the most important people or projects in your life.

Like the line at Disneyland.  You decide who gets that Fast Pass.  Who gets to talk to you first.  Who gets your listening and undivided attention right now.

Habits of Excellence:

This week's Habit of Excellence:  Write it down.

A goal.  A shopping list.  A system.

“When you write down your ideas you automatically focus your full attention on them. Few if any of us can write one thought and think another at the same time. Thus a pencil and paper make excellent concentration tools.”
Michael Leboeuf    (Quote shared by Positivity Blog.)

Life Hack share a great post about why it's important to write it down

Today's focus:

Not just an idea, not just a dream, you need a plan.

When you write it down you are giving yourself not one gift, but two:  Clarity and focus.

Perhaps you've never used a written planner.  Here's why it works for me.

  • Set goals for the month/ week and evaluate the progress, or lack of, achieving these goals.
  • Keep my spending tracker right with me.
  • Ideas come and I need to write them down.  Moleskin's don't work for me.
  • How my mind works. I remember where I wrote it, not just what I wrote down. Called cognitive anchoring.

Those are just the first few reasons a written planner works for me.  I teach you how I run the many components of our lives from the planner in depth in my Enriched Woman 90 coaching program.

Habits of Excellence:

This week's Habit of Excellence: Go to bed 15 minutes earlier.  Use this time away from your phone to let yourself be quiet, release the thoughts of the day, and just relax.

This one tiny habit has helped me get to that deep sleep faster.

Today's focus:

I was stuck in the older format of the show.  It has taken a lot of work to create the show I've always wanted to do.  This is that show.

My purpose is to help you, the woman who is taking care of so many others, that she has lost herself.

This episode is a personal look into what I'm working on, how we are working to downsize our home into a smaller space and how decluttering your junk at home is an excellent way to take a deep dive into what is happening in your personal, emotional space.

Creating margin, or a buffer, in your budget gives you another level of comfort, breathing room, to Drive your MoneyBus.

Today we examine how to create margin:

  • How filling the accounts to provide for the family and your needs has given us freedom
  • When the cost of gas goes down, continue putting the money in the account to give you some breathing room for future purchases.
  • Taking time to make the budget gives you opportunity to make your choices and set yourself up for success
  • Living your most enriched life, within your means, you are creating freedom for yourself.
  • Find ways to create margin within  one portion of your budget will give you more freedom.
  • When you change the focus and look to consume less, you are living enriched.

The March challenge:

  • This month we are going to downsize from our rental home to an apartment.
  • 40-50% of size decrease in the home is the goal.  I am working to eliminate 40-50% of our stuff.  The junk.
  • You can read more about the challenge, and share your comments by following along here.
  • Week 1 is focusing on the bedrooms.  I'll eliminate the clothes we haven't worn, the clothes that don't fit properly right now, and the shoes we haven't worn in years.

How much do you actually need in your emergency fund?  After this experience, of an emergency trip home for Grandma's funeral, consider;

  • Make a high-level plan.  (remember those earthquake drills in elementary school...)  Just a bare bones idea of the travel involved, the hotels, food, and other necessities and write out the numbers on a one-page form.  Place this form in your budget/binder book.
  • Decide really how much will you need in the moment of crisis.  Write it out on the page in your budget binder.
  • Open a new savings account specifically for this situation.  Open the account today, either online or in person.
  • Start the savings for this.  Make it automatic.  $25/ a week can make a big difference in a quick year or less.

How does the 80-20 rule work in your life?  Are you spending your money & time in life the way you want?

In this episode we discuss:

  • The Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule.
  • Defining the 20/30/50 rule.
    • 50% of your income goes to the fixed costs: rent, utilities, food (groceries), and clothes
    • 20% goes to the future costs:  pay off debt, investments, savings, emergency fund and retirement.
    • 30% fun costs:  (lifestyle) cell phone, cable, internet, movie nights, date nights, gym memberships, travel
  • February's challenge is about relationships.  The way we build relationships is shown by how we spend our time.
  • 80% of our time is spent with people you have to spend time with (co-workers, classmates)
  • 20% of our time is spent with people you choose to spend time with (how are we showing our loved ones)
  • How are you spending 20%of your time that you want to spend time with?
  • What does it mean to Think Enriched?  It's not all puppy dogs and rainbows.

Social media and your money?  Oh yeah!  They are connected.  Today we talk to social media expert, Pauline Stockhausen, who shares her money story and how she uses social media the smart way.

We discuss:

  • How meeting a minimalist impacted her entire family.
  • How she moved from a large 5 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom and the change that has made on her family & perspective.
  • Pauline describes how being "house poor" has added so much stress and what that felt like to eliminate it.
  • In just a few quick months they've been able to pay off $10K
  • That six month rush of working to pay off the debt...then fall off the plan of discipline.
  • "The poor mentality," how people struggle and buy more than they can afford to keep them in a poor situation.
  • "Saying no I don't need that was really hard!"
  • I stopped shopping to avoid the temptations.
  • When you do a budget, you think you are going to miss out on stuff...Being broke has been such a great thing for our family because we've been together on the beach, swimming in the ocean.  It's like we have a more fulfilling life when we're poor.
  • You have money and you spend it, or you realize that it's a tool and a budget helps you align your priorities and spend your time on a more fulfilling life.
  • As a social media expert, Pauline shares how she stays positive while being online several hours a day.
  • Social media can be a lot of drama, watch how you spend your time in groups.
  • An influencer is someone who leads online.  It's not about the number of followers, it's about the person who helps you do better.
  • Finding influencers online who speak to you directly.
  • A great social media influencer is like "A snapshot of bliss."
  • Process and appreciate what we have learned in life.
  • Social media makes everything more accessible.
  • How we met online and became fast friends (it wasn't a woo-woo moment, either.)
  • Take those online relationships and make them real life relationships.
  • The key is to be 100% genuinely YOU.  That's the entire secret.
  • Follow the people who are doing what you want to be doing.
  • The curvy woman's fashion show in New Zealand...how Pauline learned to walk the runway.
  • "Just because you're a bigger woman doesn't mean your life ends."
  • Decide what you want to achieve online, or ask yourself, "Who do you want to connect with?"
  • Look at the messages on your newsfeed, is it positive?  A quick unfollow made a big difference.
  • Clearing that space gives you space & time to move forward.

"Drive Your MoneyBus," a phrase I say regularly.

  • You were given a MoneyBus as an adult.  No one can drive that bus but you.
  • Your MoneyBus may look different than others.  It doesn't matter, you are the one driving.
  • You have to study and practice to get an actual driver's license, but it's not like for money.
  • Money matters, but it's only part of the equation.  A life that hase
  • The MoneyBus is a powerful piece of machinery.  It's always moving either forward or backward.  You have to control it.
  • The gas that powers this engine is your income.  Use it wisely.  Make smart decisions.  Determine wants/needs.This gives you more to use.
  • You need a map or GPS, your budget.  This is your plan to get you from this paycheck to the next.
  • If the conditions change, you stop, make adjustments and you "recalculate" the plan.
  • Driving the MoneyBus is a big responsibility.  It can take you directly to the destination or run straight in the gutter.
  • Your MoneyBus doesn't look like others.  Start with where you are, with the size of the vehicle you have and move forward.
  • That small vehicle can transform into a sedan.  You have more space to work with and can live more comfortably.
  • You have even more power at your fingertips.
  • The MoneyBus is loaded.  You are able to help others on their journey as you continue on your journey.
  • You can find even more opportunities to enrich lives with your MoneyBus!
  • So go on, now.  Drive Your MoneyBus!

 Make 2016 your Enriched Year!

"How you think matters."  When you are talking to yourself, you make all the difference in your life.

  • This podcast is part personal journal of my ups and downs as we are paying off all of our debt and getting our finances completely in order; and, in big part, it is learning from those who have been successful with money.  We talk to money experts and regular Joes that have made significant strides with their financial situations.
  • Imagine a pie chart of life, all the important things in your life are in there.  Money is like an oval that touches every aspect of that pie chart.  When your finances are in order it directly impacts other parts of your life. Talk about Money
  • What you are learning from money management strategies?
  • Christmas 2013, we made the goal to pay of $5,000 of credit card debt in 2014.
  • We are a single income family household and we have been able to:
    • Learn how to set up our own budget
    • We made a budget, worked through trial & error.  And the fights.  Oooh, the fights... (we've talked about those fights on this episode.)
    • I was on a "shopping detox" and didn't even realize it.
    • We held each other accountable even on the tough days and paid off $25,000 of debt in 2014.
    • We traveled, visited family, and were able to still pay off another $15,000 of debt in 2015.
  • An additional phase of Thinking Enriched in my personal life, weight loss and tracking my calories, steps and workouts.
  • Thinking about the goal is the first step.  Getting off your hiney is the other part of the equation to achieve any goal.
  • Monthly challenges are part of listening in to Think Enriched.
  • January's Challenge is the Pantry Challenge. It's basically 30 days to help you: avoid waste in the kitchen; ensure you are eating healthy well-balanced meals; and clearly, save money. The basic steps are:
    • Make an inventory of your pantry, freezer, and dry goods that you have stocked up throughout the years.
    • Plan meals around these items so to eat up some of that food and avoid waste or continuous shopping of items you or your family doesn't eat much.
    • Spend as little as possible at the grocery store for the time frame allotted (the month of January.)
  • Share your Friday Wins in the Crew.
  • When you write down your goal, you have your mind in order and focused on achieving it.  When you get to work on that goal, you exercise the discipline to make it possible.  Having both parts of this equation makes you unstoppable!
  • Goals are like dominoes.  Set and achieve one and it will roll you right on to the next.  And the next.
  • That's what Think Enriched is all about.  Will you join me on this journey?
